1. Assess The Damage

First things first – the damage and its extent will need to be assessed to determine the course of action required. If the damage is minor or only superficial, the wounds may heal on their own, however more extensive or deeper damage may require intervention. Look for any signs of pest infestation, disease and decay which may look like fungal growth, active insects and discoloured wood. If the damage is significant, it’s a great idea to have your local Arborist inspect the tree and carry out treatment to give the tree the very best chance.

2. Clean The Wound

If you want to try to treat the wound yourself, be sure to use the appropriate tools and only attempt it if you are experienced or you could make the damage worse and further harm the tree.

For deeper wounds, you will need to clean the damaged area by removing any loose or peeling bark. Make sure you use a very sharp, sterilised knife to create smooth edges around the wound. Using a blunt knife can tear the bark and cause more damage. Cleaning the wound in this way will encourage the tree to heal more efficiently by promoting the growth of callus tissue, which covers and protects the exposed wood.

Wound dressings and paints are not recommended for treating tree bark damage, as these products can trap moisture, leading to rot and can create an environment conducive to disease. Allow the wound to air-dry naturally for best results.

3. Support And Care

A strong, healthy tree is much more likely to recover from bark damage than a sick one. Provide ongoing care and maintenance for optimum tree healthy by making sure your tree has enough water, especially when it’s particularly dry and hot, apply mulch, remove weeds which can compete for water and nutrients and regularly prune dead or damaged branches. You may wish to add fertiliser depending on your soil.

4. Monitor

Once the wound has been treated, regularly monitor the wound and the tree itself for any signs of pests, disease or stress. Early detection and intervention are critical for preventing further damage to the tree.

1. Careful Gardening

Tree bark damage is often caused by lawn mowers and whipper snippers striking the tree. With this in mind, be more careful not to go so close to your trees next time you are carrying out your yard maintenance or keep a grass-free area immediately around your trees.  

2. Apply Mulch

Applying mulch around the base of the tree will keep lawn maintenance equipment from damaging your tree. It also has a number of benefits such as helping retain soil moisture, temperature regulation, weed reduction and helps keep pests away. However, it’s essential to mulch correctly. A thick layer of mulch piled against the trunk can retain excessive moisture, leading to rot and decay. The mulch should be spread in a doughnut shape around the tree, leaving space around the trunk to breathe.

3. Physical Barriers

If you are noticing significant and recurring tree bark damage you may want to install a physical barrier around the base of the tree. This can be very effective especially if you have a young tree with very thin bark which is more likely to be vulnerable to damage from gardening equipment and animals. A simple wire mesh or a plastic tree guard can provide protection from damage.

4. Proper Pruning Techniques

Incorrect pruning techniques can damage the tree and leave it susceptible to pest infestation and disease. Always use very sharp, clean tools and make precise cuts to avoid tearing the tree bark. If you are inexperienced or don’t have the right tools, leave it to the professionals.  

5. Animal Deterrents

For trees that are being significantly damaged by animals you may wish to apply a repellent to help deter animals from chewing on the bark.
