Just like us, trees can be vulnerable to sickness and disease. Whilst trees can often overcome illness on their own, in some cases, a tree can die unless proper intervention and action is carried out. So how do you know if you have a dying tree? And what steps can help save it? Let’s take a look at our top tips for below.

What Are The Signs Of A Dying Tree?

Trees often show tell-tale signs of sickness. Some of the most common signs are:

  • Increase in loss of leaves
  • Leaf changes such as discolouration or holes
  • Presence or evidence of pests
  • Increase in deadwood
  • Presence of fungus
  • Significant wounds, peeling or cracked bark
  • Sudden lean
  • Exposed, damaged roots

How To Help Revive A Dying Tree

Aussie Tree Solutions Revive A Dying Tree

If you suspect your tree is unwell, it’s critical to act fast. Delaying action could be the difference between your tree surviving or dying. And a sick tree can be a dangerous tree.  If you notice changes in your tree like those mentioned previously, we highly recommend having your local, trusted Arborist carry out a full inspection to assess the tree and determine what steps need to be taken to get the tree back to good health.

If it’s a complex issue your Arborist will have the knowledge and experience to give your tree the very best chance at recovery. The Arborist will also be able to determine if your tree poses any risk to your home and property and can advise if the tree will need to be removed for your safety.

There are however some things you can do yourself to give your tree the best chance of overcoming sickness:

Apply Mulch

Mulch is incredible for trees for a number of reasons. It helps regulate temperature and retain moisture in the soil, it helps keep weeds and pests away and can boost the nutrient content of soil to name a few

Water

Make sure the tree has adequate water, but is not overwatered, as both can have adverse effects

Apply Fertiliser

If your soil is lacking in nutrients it can be a good idea to apply a good quality fertiliser. Be sure to follow the instructions for application carefully

Prune Dead Or Diseased Limbs

The presence of dead, dying or diseased branches can encourage pests and allow disease to spread, potentially compromising your tree. Act promptly and remove these branches, but only if you have the appropriate tools and it is safe for you to do so.

Pruning trees can be extremely dangerous so unless you are experienced, the tree is small and not too high it’s best left to a professional Arborist.

Clean Up

Keep your yard clean and tidy. Be sure to remove green waste from your yard like grass clippings, palm fronds and other waste materials to help keep pests away and get rid of weeds regularly which can compete for nutrients and water.
